The role of the reinforcement in a composite material is fundamentally to increase the mechanical properties of the neat resin matrix. The main factors that govern the fibre selection are: tensile strength, tensile modulus, density and impact resistance.

Fibre reinforcements are available in different forms, such as: yarn, strand and roving; all associated to bundle of filaments. When combined to produce a flat sheet and held together, they are defined as a fabric categorized by the orientation of the fibers: unidirectional, multiaxial, random and braid.
